The code was generated, opaque, and (critically) not the artifact that the client had actually written. The spec was what the client had intended. The code was what the machine had interpreted. The gap between them was where the problem lived.
But that’s enough introduction. What I want to discuss here is first the extremely unwise gamble that the administration took and then the trap that it now finds itself in, from which there is no comfortable escape.
